FENG SUAVE TOKING, DOZING

Dutch psych-pop duo Feng Suave (Daniël Schoemaker and Daniël de Jong) ponder over the line we walk between global issues and self-care in their delightfully melodic new single ‘Toking, Dozing’. Here they are to explain: “Often, lyrics are about the terrible things that happen in the world, but at the end of the day, most people only care about what affects them directly. Either way, dolphins are dying, deforestation is happening at the rate of a football field per second, there’s war and famine; the list goes on… but people are removed, they’re just toking, dozing, ‘cause they can’t find a way to really care, and why would they with their own stuff going on? It’s about the conflict between caring for your own mental and physical health, whilst still being attentive to the bigger picture and caring about the wider world.” Backed by jaunty keys and cosy acoustic guitars, we’re led to think about our own mortality…. but also, what about the dolphins? It’s all done in the same easy-breezy stroke of laid-back songwriting reflecting how easily our mind can drift from one issue to the other. Feng Sauve show the world, as wonderful and as terrifying as it is, through the hazy lens of someone far removed from the reality of it all. If we’re honest with ourselves, that’s the way we’re all positioned; placing the ego of self before (even if that’s just a hairsbreadth) our concern for the globe.
